Sick Day!

Been feeling under the weather all week but it's finally caught up to me today...my day off, Saturday. I am not happy about that...but at least I can rest without worrying about work. I do still feel guilty about still being in my PJ's at 2:22pm! There is always chores to do around the house but they're just going to have to wait.

I have a headache that just will not quit! I've taken stuff for it (Advil yesterday and Sinus Headache stuff today) but it's not even touching it. I've been sleeping off and on all day...the only way to get away from the pain. I don't have a temperature so I figure it's not the flu. I also had my H1N1 flu shot earlier in the week...it hurt too!

Going to sign off and gets some more rest...and hopefully when I wake up again the pain will have left me. PLEASE!

HAVE A GOOD WEEKEND EVERYONE.

Yummy Apple Dip!

Last weekend I went to a party at my Aunt Shirley's house and I brought a yummy apple dip and a taco dip!

The apple dip is my sister-in-law's recipe. This was my first time making it and I was a little nervous but it turned out so yummy and was a big hit...everyone wanted to know how to make it.
This is one of my favorite treats! It's so simple to make and if you're having a large gathering..you can easily double it. It gets raves!

Diane's Famous Apple Dip

1 - brick of cream cheese
1/2 cup brown sugar
1/2 teaspoon of vanilla extract (my addition to the original recipe)
1 - 250g tub of caramel sauce (the kind you would use for apple dipping)
3 or 4 Skor Bars
6 Green Apples cut into wedges (you can also use other varieties or even other fruit like Pears)

Mix softened cream cheese (I microwave for 30 seconds to soften) with brown sugar and vanilla. Tip: I use the mixer attachment on my blender to do the cream cheese mixture but I am sure you could mix by hand as well.

Make sure your caramel sauce is at room temperature -- it will be easier to layer.

Crush the Skor Bars into bits (I use a zip lock bag and a rolling pin and pound away).

Layer the cream cheese mixture in the bottom of an 8x8 cake dish, then layer the caramel sauce, top with Skor Bar crumbs.

Serve with apple slices for dipping. (A secret for keeping the cut apples from turning brown is soaking the cut pieces in water with lemon juice.)

The Taco Dip is one that I got from a co-worker...and I've been making it for years - I always get requests to bring this to parties.

Lisa's Taco Dip

Mix together (again I use the mixer attachment for my blender):

1 brick of cream cheese (softened)
1/2 tub (250g) of cottage cheese
1 package of Taco Seasoning

Spread cream cheese mixture over large plate (or tray)

Layer on Top with:

2 to 3 cups shredded lettuce (I cut thinly and then chop again)
2 cups finely diced tomato
2 or 3 diced green onion
2 cups grated cheese (cheddar works well)

Serve with tortilla chips - I like the whole grain ones as they seem to have more flavor.

This dip is very addictive and filling. Everyone is surprised that it has cottage cheese in it.

Have a wonderful weekend!

Things that go bump in the night!

Woke up to a loud bang that echoed from downstairs. Scared the you-know-what out of us both. Felt to see if the kitty was in bed and knew right away that he's into something.

I have a reclining cherub that has dried flowers on it and the kitty loves to chew on things like that...he knocked it over and now it's in pieces. I forgave my kittle. He had a hard week this week...had to have 7 teeth pulled. He's doing well and recovering.

This is our first Halloween in the new neighbourhood. We had about 50 kids and I had enough candy for 300! We were giving out handfuls and still have too much left.

I have a big box of mini-Mars Bars that I've decided I'll melt down for my MAR BAR SQUARES.

MAR BAR SQUARES

4 regular size Mars Bars
4 tbsp margarine
4 tbsp corn syrup
7 - 8 cups Rice Krispies cereal
10 oz milk chocolate (for on top)

Cut Mars Bars into small pieces and melt slowly with margarine and syrup, stirring constantly. When mixture is smooth, remove from heat and stir in rice krispies. Press into a lightly greased 9 x13 baking pan. When cool, top with the melted milk chocolate. Let cool again and cut into bite sized squares.

Usually I line the pan with wax paper instead of greasing it. It's easier to get them out...plus when you cut these up it can get a bit messy and the wax paper helps with that too. Another tip is if you refrigerate after adding the milk chocolate...bring back to room temperature before you cut them.

I make these at holidays and share them with the neighbours. They are always a big hit and nobody can figure out that it's made with chocolate bars.

My niece & nephew stopped by...are they the cutest little Raggedy Ann & Andy. My sister-in-law made the costumes! And even painted the socks.

My other nephew was Darth Vader...he loves all things Star Wars. He even had a light saber.

Happy Halloween!

Thank goodness it's Saturday!

Going back to work after holiday was extremely difficult. I was looking forward to getting back and seeing my co-workers...plus I had stuff to get done...but OMG it was pure insanity.

It was a very overwhelming week. I feel like I am on demand but just keep accumulating tasks without the time to finish anything. I ended up starting early and staying late Thursday and last night (and "no" there is no such thing as overtime pay or time off for the extra time in). Just thinking about it makes me grumpy.

Changing gears! It's Saturday! I didn't set my alarm and woke up when the light came in my window. I love Saturdays.

It looks like fall outside today. The colours of the leaves are so beautiful against the blue gray skies. We live near an escarpment and the trees look amazing, like a beaufitul quilt of oranges, yellows and gold. Last night the fog slowly crept down, I wish I could describe how it looked. It was just so beautiful. We just moved here in last summer, it's really a lovely area.

Last night I picked up the latest issue of FIRST. It's not one of my usual magazine's but the cover got me. There are some great articles. One was really interesting to me, about how some women have difficulties processing carbs and recommended a low carb (not no carb) for 8 weeks to kick start weight loss an then to re-add in a limited amount of carbs after that. I think I am one of those women.

I do attend Weight Watchers as a lifefime member. I wish I could say I am doing well but I am gaining (not WW's fault). I am doing my own plan, which is great if you want to slowly gain weight. I exercise regularly by going to the gym and walking but my food choices are heavy on the carbs (I love all things starch - bread, pasta, rice and potato).

When I first joined WW the plan was different and breads and fruits were limited to so many selections a day (as were all foods other than veggies). I lost 7 lbs the first week and then lost at least a pound or two consistently (there were weeks of staying the same too) but I lost the weight over a period of 6 months. Now it's back and then some. :-(

I know I do better when I limit the starches. Even if I can have so many Points per day...I still have to think about what type of Points I am eating.

More than the weight loss, I just want to feel healthy. I haven't been feeling well at all, I can see it in my eyes and face (everything is puffy). Plus my energy is low. Going to try to go lower carb in my Points selections and see how I do. Starting now...instead of my usual toast (WW) and peanut butter, I had two eggs scrambled for breakfast.

I can do it! I know I can.

Have a great weekend!

It's been a lazy week for me. I've been off work on holiday for a staycation. The weather hasn't been the greatest but it's October (feeling more like November) and hey, this is Canada...you never know what you're going to get. It seems our summer ended abruptly and winter is quickly moving in.
So far...today looks like it's going to be a nice bright day. I don't mind the cold so much if at least I can get some sunshine.

Right now, as I am typing, my kittie is laying on my left arm...it's nap time. He gets very cuddly the day after he has fluids. He goes every other week to the vet for fluids (he has kidney issues). He's a very sweet kitty to us (his people) but he lets out his inner mountain lion when he goes to the vet or is around people who are scared of him (he can smell fear). He's a simese and can intimidate some...all 8 lbs of him!

I can't believe my week is almost up and I have to go back to work on Monday...the holiday goes too quickly. Now if my 25 mill came in last night's lotto then I think I have different plans for Monday...say a limo ride to T.O. to pick up my winnings! Don't we all wish for the lotto. What would you do? I think I would plan an actual vacation to say...Paris? It's lovely in the fall.

This lazy girl has got to get moving...so signing off. Happy Weekend!

Happy Thanksgiving!

I know I am late with this post...Thanksgiving was this past Monday, but I hope for all who celebrated that it was a good one.

I was in a bit of a panic over the size of our Turkey. By my calculations we needed a 12 to 15 lbs turkey to have enough plus left overs for everyone to take home. DH picked up a fresh turkey on Saturday Morning...he asked the meat dept guy how big the bird was (as it was shown in kg). I didn't check it until Sunday night...it looked like a big chicken! Turns out it was just over 10 lbs. The stores are now closed for the holiday and we'd have to make do! I found a small ham in the freezer so decided to make that as well. Everything turned out fine...there was lots of food. Not as much left overs of turkey as we normally have (in the past I've usually made a 20 lbs bird) but we still had enough to have turkey sandwiches...so it's all good.

I have so much to be thankful for. I am so very blessed.

Easter Weekend

The weekend! Yeah... A long weekend! Double Yeah.

I needed a break badly. Work and focus on work is all I seem to do. I need to think about something else for a while.

I am reading a book called the How of Happiness. It takes a scientific look at the why and how of happiness. It's really fascinating. Right now I am in the why section of understanding happiness and looking forward to implementing the how...cause I am not getting it on my own.

What I do find is that I look for distractions to quiet the negative dialog of my thoughts. The problem with doing this...is that it's not always healthy choices...too much junk food, too much tv watching...too much of anything is not good.

A long weekend...some time to unplug. Unfortunately my Hubban is away on his own adventure without me. So the time is bitter sweet.

Yesterday I went to the States for some shopping...I got some wall art...a metal Eiffel Tower...I love it! I am not sure where I am going to put it. Plus I got two pairs of Sketcher sandals. I love my Sketchers! I love Sandals. I can't wait to get a peddi and start wearing them. I hate socks...but it's still too cold out there to pack them away just yet.

Going to Brunch on Sunday with my parents & my little sister, her hubban and my nephew. Later in the day I'll be going supper at my Sister-in-law's with the whole gang and will get to see my other nephew and niece. It's a feast day!

Hoppy Easter Everyone!

The adventures of...

This work week has been brutal...the saga continues to beat me down...but I get up again. Wonder if it's me...or is it the job...it can suck the life out of me...so by Friday I am a puddle of mush. Not at all motivated to do anything.

I came home to an empty house and called the Hubban to see where he is...he was suppose to be home to take me out for dinner. I waited...he showed up and we went to leave and he passed me a key and said...you can drive. As his car is Standard and I am vehicley challenged in that regard, I didn't understand till I looked at the key...not the Volkswagen key...and not my Honda key. I step out of the house to find this covertable sportscar in the driveway.

http://www.nissan.ca/vehicles/cars/350z/en/

Holy Cow! I am not driving that...I tried to give the keys back...but he wouldn't take them. I finally put them in his pocket. No WAY! It's his friend's car...lent to him as they were out and about yesterday. It's a beautiful car and I would never drive it...for fear of breaking it or something. Don't get me wrong...I have a good driving record but I just don't like driving other people's expensive sports cars...just my rule.

So Hubban drove and we went for supper. I like it! I like it ALOT! Now my little 1995 Honda just doesn't seem to cut it. WAHHHH.

Oh well...it was fun to go for a ride. But I told Mike...I'd have to lose weight and get a new wardrobe to own a car like that....now that I think of it...I'd have to get a whole new attitute too. Funny how a car could do that eh?

Anyway...today is Saturday and I am just chillin listening to my favorite on-line station...Coconut Groove Lounge on www.live365.com

Enjoy your weekend. They're over too fast.

The colour BLUE

This week has been rather trying and it's affected my mood...which is usaully on the blue side as it is...but it bordered on anger and frustration and then sadness. I hate these moods. And I wonder will I feel good again?

A Day at the Beach

Monday was the Family Day holiday...so I went to the beach for a walk. The wind was cold but the sun was out and was warm. I stopped along the way to snap some pics. The beach looks much different than it would a few weeks ago. We've had a lot of snow this winter...but the major thaw and rain over the previous week washed it away.

They're forecasting more snow for today...I just hope we don't get dumped on again. We have a little front yard and run out of places to pile up the snow.

I am looking forward to spring/summer...I love going to hang out at Baranga's on the Beach patio when the weather is good. Usually meet the work gang there the first early close for summer hours...we get out 3pm on Fridays in July & August.

The Must Sew List continues...

Here we are in the middle of February...but my thoughts are on spring and summer...of being able to sit out on the back deck and take in the warm breezes.
I was browsing the Vogue Patterns and found this simple ensemble...the shorter top & Capri pants are very cute and I could totally see wearing on a warm summer day. The top looks very easy to make, especially due to the cap sleeves and the pants would also go together very quickly.
I could see changing up the fabric, adding some pretty lace trim and you'd have an adorable pair of pj's. I will have to get this pattern for sure.

Anniversary Valentine

Yesterday (Friday February 13th) was our 16th Wedding Anniversary. It seems like time has jumped ahead so very quickly, that I honestly do not know where the years have gone.

It was a brutal winter back in 1993...we had been hit with some wicked snow storms and we were worried that our guests might not come if the weather was poor. We lucked out that weekend...it was cold but we didn't get more accumulation.

With our family and friends as witness we were married in the church two blocks from my home and then off to the old Warplane Heritage Museum for our photos. It was sooooo cold in the hanger that my poor feet were frozen (I had the cutest little shoes but needed boots). My poor wedding party were half froze as well. We had some great photos with the vintage aircraft as the backdrop.

Then it was time to party. We were whisked off in our limo to the hall for a lovely dinner, heartfelt wishes and a fantastic party. The night went so quickly and I was overwhelmed by all these people who where there for us...it made my heart swell. I'd been told everyone enjoyed the meal and had a great time -- and that made me very happy. For our wedding favours and in keeping with Valentine's we gave little cherubs as a keepsake.

We took off to Toronto right after the reception for our flight to Montego Bay the next day. We had to be up in the middle of the night to be at the airport for 3 hours prior for International departures for our early morning departure. When we arrived...poor Michael was a little bit wound up...we went to meet with our transfer bus and the guy took our bags and put them on..when Michael got on and took them off...the guy reminded him...RELAX MAN, YOU'RE IN JAMAICA NOW. Poor Michael. He didn't unwind till we got to the resort and he finally chilled out with a nice welome rum punch. After we'd been there a few days...he was right in tune with the Island and it's mantra. We had a great time...we toured some old plantation homes...we did Dunns River Falls and even had a honeymooners Lagoon Cruise at night.

Back to reality...a new job...a new apartment...a whole new beginning...a new adventure.

Kasey's Birthday!

Today my beloved kitty turns 16 years old.

I found this link to figure out his age in Cat Years...

http://www.bettycat.com/home/ages.html

He's 73 years old! But still thinks he's a kitten.

He has several names -- Kasey, Kaseykin, Lazlo Pea Chick, Chick-a-pea.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY KASEY!

Spring Inspiration

I was browsing the pattern sites for some new spring inspiration...I found a couple on Butterick that I am going to have to get.

I love jackets! I can't help it. And B5335 has a collar I adore. I like the t-shirt too and the capri pants.

This little jacket has lots of options and I am enchanted by the green version. Not only am I mad about this colour (and have some fabric in my stash this very shade) but the cute cap sleeves are adorable. I could see this little jacket with a little pencil skirt or a pair of capri pants.
The white view looks very nautical and would be perfect with a pair of navy trousers and a little striped tee tank underneath.

Today it's warmed up and everything is melting...but lets not kid ourselves...it's only February and this is Canada. I hope it stays about zero for a few days to help melt the piles and piles of snow we have.

Welome to my new blog...

It's finally the Saturday and I've slept in till 9am! Normally the alarm is going off (annoying me) at 5:50am.

Last night I was out with 6 of my lotto pool friends from work. We buy lottos weekly, with the hope of winning big. Any small winnings are saved for an annual dinner out. We had $210 and ended up having to put a little bit in to cover dinner and drinks.

This year we went to an authentic Italian restaurant. It's called Romanos and it's in a strip plaza...the outside is definitely not inviting and I wouldn't go out of my way to go there but...some of my co-workers have given it high marks. Inside it's totally different...the decor is very modern and has a cool jazz type vibe.

The best part is that they didn't rush us...it was very relaxed and slow. If you're in a hurry...don't go here but if you want to enjoy the company of your friends and have an amazing meal...this is the place.
